About the Programme

The Medical Administrative Assistant is an essential role that is necessary for a smooth, productive environment within a medical facility. Since the Medical Administrative Assistant is often the first point of contact, both over the phone and in person, it is essential to maintain a professional demeanor at all times. The Medical Administrative Assistant is responsible for a wide array of duties which include phone reception, patient scheduling, collecting payments, and maintaining patient files. In addition to knowledge and skill, the successful medical administrative assistant should have a pleasant personality, strong communication skills and a good work ethic.

 

Description and Programme Structure

The Medical Administrative Assistant duties have evolved in recent years. The MAA is required to be efficient in front office skills as well as knowledgeable in billing, coding, administrative tasks and general patient care. They will also need basic knowledge of medical terminology, patient care skills and general office skills.

A medical administrative assistant/billing and coding specialist responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Answering phones
  • Processing bills
  • Scheduling and coordinating appointments
  • Verifying patient insurance
  • Providing quality customer service to patients
  • Filing insurance claims
  • Maintaining records
  • Checking in patients at the front desk
  • Communicating with patients

Preparation for Examinations

The AMCA consist of multiple choice questions. You will have a set time in which to complete the exam.

The test is comprised of 100 questions. The breakdown is as follows:

  • 30% medical administrative,
  • 30% billing and coding
  • 10% each in medical terminology, patient care, infection control and medical law and ethics.

 

The examinations will comprise of:

  • One online M.S. paper covering the syllabus set by AMMA
  • Assessment of portfolio, from work attachment, and course work.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates under taking these qualifications. Career Advancement Programme (CAP)applicants, ages 16- 19will be subjected to do a Math’s and English entry test OR applicants should possess a minimum of four (4) CXC/ CAPE subjects, Math’s and English and any other related subjects OR a minimum of two (2) years’ work experience may also be considered. Applicants should also complete and submit a registration form with the required supporting documents stated on the application form. Applicants ages 16- 19 who do have the specified CXC/CAPE subjects may still be subjected to sit a Diagnostic Mathematics and English Test.
